Overview

Fern Web designed one of the first interactive standings and statistics in the middle 2000s. We were the original designers of the mcla.us site and from there multiple regional sites in the US. We were the original develops for the WCLA and BC Jr. A website with complete statistics package.

Our original WWLL site was in 2012 and we redeveloped it in 2021. We then created a new WCLO site in 2023.

On top of the standings and statistics we created a customized scheduler for both leagues, which saves the organizations hundreds and hundreds of hours.

WWLL - WCLO

We created two customized websites for women’s college lacrosse leagues in the US.

The WWLL and WCLO have their client-managed websites with standings, statistics, and scheduling, all through an online, interactive feature we created.

The Challenges: Customize site for each organization

Both organizations needed their own versions of a statistics-based, website.

These are not WordPress sites, they are customized-PHP-designed websites with each page coded for the features on that page.

We also created a complete management system that lets the organizations control and manage all aspects of the websites.

Key Solutions

Both websites had separate requirements we had to customize for each one. As the leagues and teams were in multiple locations our design needed to be easy to use and implement.

We also created online tutorials and guides as the turnovers for the teams were frequent.

Edwin, the owner of Maple Ridge Physiotherapy contacted me in the Spring of 2018 explaining the issues with his current host provider and web admin person.  He asked if I could redevelop and host his site on one of my servers.  I was happy to do so and we have established a great working relationship with Edwin and I thought forward to many more years of Fern Web and Maple Ridge Physio working together.

Fern Web Design Services was contacted by one of our regular contractors we work with on other projects, due to our expertise in WordPress customization.

We were brought on as consultants and were able to develop customizations in specialized pages for Larus. We fixed their issues and gave direction and feedback on their future development plans. We continue to act as consultants.

While WordPress is a nice way of presenting data, using plugins and other native features, there are issues. One of the issues is when you need WordPress to do something it can’t as a default platform.

For that, you need expertise to get into the coding of the site and make changes to the site so it does what you want. That is what we were able to do for the Larus WordPress site.

Fern Web was contacted and presented with a time-sensitive project. The current hoster was going to offload the site and the client needed us to jump on this right away. We were able to quickly move the site to one of our servers and get the site working again. This was a seamless transition helping out our customer.

As usual, Fern Web was able to help us by finding a new server to host the site. They then redesigned the site for us.

The Challenges: interact with existing processes

The existing site was already an interactive type site, bringing in Stock quotes, marketing information and scrolling trading banners.

We needed to create new logins for each one for the client so they controlled the information on their own.

News items - Tutorials

We created a news, blog process for the client. They wanted to do their own updates so we created a comprehensive tutorial with images, text and videos so they could use these documents for their inhouse personnel. They really appreciated the extra steps we took on our own.

Fern Web was contacted by FOTF due to our work in the field of custom statistics. They had an interesting proposal and we agreed to come aboard as a partner in their company. We developed Scheduler+ a customized scheduling system for the hundreds of teams they look after. This was extremely complex work which required us to come up with a brand new concept to fulfill their objectives. This is something which hadn’t been done before but we were able to concept the issue, design and then implement it.  The first of it’s kind which saved the customer hundreds of hours of manual work.

The Challenges: Implement Scheduler

The customer (FOTF) came up with very strict business rules which would allow them to give THEIR clients something never done before.

We created an online Scheduling system between teams throughout their leagues which tracked requests, changes, and interaction with their websites.

These are amateur teams who use volunteers to manage their teams. These volunteers don’t have the time and expertise to use Google Docs, Word documents, or pdfs to get things done.

We created an online system that allowed the teams to interact with other teams to develop their schedules. The nice thing is there is no paperwork! However, the FOTF managers can follow every scheduling request and submission as we created an electronic trail of requests.

We had to create something that hadn’t been done before; multiple teams in different areas interacting with each other in a simple-to-use interface.

The business rules we created have teams limited to teams they can interact with, depending on FOTF tier, league, and divisional settings.

The nice thing about this system is we have created a total management system for FOTF. They control the creation of the teams, divisions, tiers, leagues, field locations, and everything they need to run their leagues.

Their leagues stretch throughout the US South and they are looking to expand elsewhere in the US.
