A hacked website isn’t just a technical problem. When customers can see the damage, it becomes a business problem.
In 2020, I received a call from Green Century Enterprises about a website problem that had become increasingly serious.
Their Joomla website had been infected with malware.
That alone was bad enough. But this wasn’t the first attempt at fixing it.
Green Century had already hired someone to clean the malware from the website. For a while, it appeared the problem had been solved.
Then the malware came back.
And when your company website is compromised, waiting isn’t really an option.
What Are Your Customers Seeing?
Imagine being a customer who has dealt with a company for years. You visit its website and suddenly see warnings, suspicious content, redirects or other signs that something is very wrong.
Or imagine you’re a prospective customer visiting for the first time.
You don’t know that the company itself has done nothing wrong. You don’t know that someone is already trying to repair the website.
You only know what you’re seeing on your screen.
That’s where a website security problem can quickly become a reputation problem.
Green Century needed its website cleaned up properly, and it needed to stay clean.
Removing the Malware Was Only the Beginning
When Green Century contacted me, I went through the site and dealt with the infection.
This time, the malware stayed gone.
But that experience exposed a larger issue. They were relying on an older Joomla website that had already caused them considerable trouble.
Rather than simply patching things up and hoping for the best, we decided to move forward.
I rebuilt Green Century’s website in WordPress, giving them a new foundation that would be easier to maintain, update and protect.
That was in 2020.
I’ve hosted and maintained their website ever since.
Six Years Later, I’m Still Looking After It
For me, that’s an important part of this story.
Getting a website back online is one thing.
Keeping it secure, maintained and available year after year is another.
Today, Green Century’s website continues to serve the company and its customers, showcasing its food-service packaging products and providing customers with access to its product lines and company information.
And I’m still here looking after it.
That’s what I believe website hosting and maintenance should be: you shouldn’t have to wonder who to call when something goes wrong.
When Your Website Is in Trouble, Time Matters
I’ve been doing this since 1997, and over the years I’ve had people contact me unexpectedly because something has gone seriously wrong with their website.
Sometimes the website is down.
Sometimes the domain isn’t working.
Sometimes it’s been hacked.
And sometimes, as Green Century discovered, a problem that was supposedly fixed comes right back.
Those aren’t situations where a business owner wants a support ticket and a response three days later.
You want someone to figure out what’s wrong and get to work.
That’s the kind of work I enjoy doing.
If your website has been hacked, compromised, gone offline or simply isn’t working properly, contact Fern Web. Even if you’re not currently a client, give me a call. If I can help, I will.
